If you find that there is smoke smell in your home or even your new home which you have just purchased, is there anyway you can get rid of the smell? No doubt the smoke smell can linger in the air for a long time but by applying the following 6 tips, you will be able to remove the smell for good.

1. Thorough cleaning up
This might seem like an obvious tip but the first thing you should do is to do a thorough cleaning up of your home, including the walls and carpets. Preferably, you should make use of professional equipment so if you can afford it, you might want to consider bringing in expert help in doing some serious cleaning up.

2. Use of vinegar
Once you have cleaned your house up, the next thing you need to do is to leave bowls of vinegar all around the house. Make sure you have a bowl in each room. Vinegar is known to absorb unwanted smell so by leaving the bowls of vinegar all around the house, you can help to further remove the smoke smell. You should also replace the bowls with fresh vinegar regularly to ensure effectiveness.

3. Make use of baking soda
You can also sprinkle some baking soda on the furniture and fabric in your house, leave it there for a while before cleaning them off. Baking soda is effective in absorbing scents so if you do this often, it can help to get rid of the smoke smell.

4. Buy a dehumidifier
If you find that after doing the above steps, you can still get the smell lingering in the house, you might want to install a dehumidifier to keep the moisture down. This will help to prevent the smell from being absorbed into the walls of your home.

5. Allow ample ventilation
Having sufficient ventilation in the house is vital to get the foul smell out. You can do so by leaving all the windows and doors open for a while to let the smell get out. Make sure that the fans are also turned on. You can do this a few times each week, especially at the beginning, until you are convinced that all the smoke smell is gone.

6. Total make-over
If this is a new home that you have just purchased and the smell has already been in the house for a very long time, it might be very difficult to remove the smell even by using the above methods. When that happens, you will have to take more drastic measures such as replacing all the wallpapers and carpets in the house with brand new ones. Next, check the furniture in the house for smoke smell. If you find anything, get rid of the furniture too. This might be more extreme measures but you are guaranteed to be able to remove the smell successfully.

It might not be an easy task getting rid of smoke smell but if you apply the above 6 techniques you will be able to remove it. You might not even have to use all the 6 suggestions to be successful.

Even a minor fire can bring about a major damage in your home, not to mention the psychological damage it causes you and your loved ones. It is not easy in such circumstances to restore your property to what it was. There are so many things to be taken care of. Finding a professional smoke restoration company is one step that can help you here.

When a building is caught with fire, even after the fire is extinguished the major work remains. Because, the residue of fire is even more dangerous and has to be removed as early as possible. Fire smoke can create discoloration and stains as well as the lingering odour. While you are waiting for a professional restoration company there are a few steps that you can take with the permission from the fire marshal to re-enter your home.

Have protective clothing when you enter the house. This includes gears, face mask, gloves, etc.
Encourage as much air circulation as possible.  Open all the windows and doors and let fresh air move inside. This helps in the smoky air get pushed outside.
Remove all food that was exposed to the smoke. Keep only the food that was refrigerated, canned or kept in air-tight vessels.
All the appliances should be disinfected. Make sure you keep them from coming in contact with your skin while disinfecting.
The filters in the heating and air condition systems will now be filled with soot residues. Make sure you remove these residues before switching these systems on.
Check which all parts of the house have to be disinfected and cleaned thoroughly. This might include your walls, curtains, carpets, furniture, etc. Make sure you get only professionals to do the job.
All the delicate items like photo frames, books, documents paintings should be restored only after consulting professionals.
If the smell of the smoke still lingers, contact a smoke restoration company that can neutralize the smell instead of just cover up the odour.

Smokes can be of different types like wet smoke, dry smoke, residues from paint and varnishes, fuel oils, etc. A professional smoke restoration company can successfully identify the type and therefore provide effective restoration services. Moreover, it can help you save a lot of your time and effort and create that “it never happened” effect.
