It doesn’t matter if you just managed to spill the entire gallon of water over your carpet, whether your tub overflowed because you forgot to turn off the water, or whether you were caught in a flood. The results are the same: wet carpet.

This is not only annoying, but it can also be costly if you find that you need to replace your carpet. And if you happen to have wall-to-wall carpeting then your costs can rise considerably.

To guard against the costs that having wet carpet can bring in, Homeowner’s insurance can help. But then again, if you don’t have this you can be assured that your costs might be somewhere in the field of astronomical.

This is especially true if the water has seeped through your carpet and gotten into the padding underneath your carpet. If this is the case, you might find that even the most powerful wet carpet vacuum will be unable to get the excess water out. In this instance your best bet is to replace the carpet entirely.

Or, if only a small portion of your carpet has been damaged you can think about cutting that piece out and replacing it with another piece. The whole problem that arises however is that of mold and mildew.

If your wet carpet has been left alone for long enough with nothing better to do than to propagate bacteria then you can be assured that mold and mildew will be your bosom companions.

If this is the case then you are most definitely better off replacing your carpet with a newer, dryer one. Otherwise you can face possible health problems, many of which are in the respiratory system. If you have young kids then it is definitely a better idea to get the carpet changed so that unnecessary problems don’t occur in the long run.

On the other hand, if your have a wet rug, and not a wet carpet, then your problems and costs just became that much smaller. A wet rug is easier to deal with than a wet carpet simply for the reason that you have the ability to move it around to get it dry.

To get back to your lovely, costly wall-to-wall carpeting, if only a small patch of the carpet has been water logged and you catch it in time you have the advantage. And any serious damage can be averted.

This can be done by blotting up the water using something like a kitchen towel. You might have to go through the equivalent of an entire roll to accomplish your task, but what’s that with having to replace your entire wet carpet?

Just keep blotting away until every last drop of moisture is soaked up into the kitchen towels. And as an added precaution if you keep your air conditioner on, the temperature and the humidity levels low, you might be able to avert disaster.

If you find that there is smoke smell in your home or even your new home which you have just purchased, is there anyway you can get rid of the smell? No doubt the smoke smell can linger in the air for a long time but by applying the following 6 tips, you will be able to remove the smell for good.

1. Thorough cleaning up
This might seem like an obvious tip but the first thing you should do is to do a thorough cleaning up of your home, including the walls and carpets. Preferably, you should make use of professional equipment so if you can afford it, you might want to consider bringing in expert help in doing some serious cleaning up.

2. Use of vinegar
Once you have cleaned your house up, the next thing you need to do is to leave bowls of vinegar all around the house. Make sure you have a bowl in each room. Vinegar is known to absorb unwanted smell so by leaving the bowls of vinegar all around the house, you can help to further remove the smoke smell. You should also replace the bowls with fresh vinegar regularly to ensure effectiveness.

3. Make use of baking soda
You can also sprinkle some baking soda on the furniture and fabric in your house, leave it there for a while before cleaning them off. Baking soda is effective in absorbing scents so if you do this often, it can help to get rid of the smoke smell.

4. Buy a dehumidifier
If you find that after doing the above steps, you can still get the smell lingering in the house, you might want to install a dehumidifier to keep the moisture down. This will help to prevent the smell from being absorbed into the walls of your home.

5. Allow ample ventilation
Having sufficient ventilation in the house is vital to get the foul smell out. You can do so by leaving all the windows and doors open for a while to let the smell get out. Make sure that the fans are also turned on. You can do this a few times each week, especially at the beginning, until you are convinced that all the smoke smell is gone.

6. Total make-over
If this is a new home that you have just purchased and the smell has already been in the house for a very long time, it might be very difficult to remove the smell even by using the above methods. When that happens, you will have to take more drastic measures such as replacing all the wallpapers and carpets in the house with brand new ones. Next, check the furniture in the house for smoke smell. If you find anything, get rid of the furniture too. This might be more extreme measures but you are guaranteed to be able to remove the smell successfully.

It might not be an easy task getting rid of smoke smell but if you apply the above 6 techniques you will be able to remove it. You might not even have to use all the 6 suggestions to be successful.
